Crowds flock to MIXfm event

The 26th Annual MIXfm packed them in again this year at the Marriott Unversity Park. Hundreds of expectant and veteran parents and even grandparents spent the day perusing the vendor booths that filled the convention hall Aug. 8.

Including a Tucson Medical Center (TMC) booth that handed out turtle backpacks and foam turtle head pieces. Everywhere there was a sea of green as it became quickly apparent that the TMC was a definite stop on the Baby Fair 2015 tour.

“That’s our mascot Thomas the turtle,” a TMC staff member called out as she walked by the Diaper Bank booth.

The Diaper Bank of Southern Arizona hosted the annual Daddy Diaper Olympics and pulled in some very determined and enthusiastic pops, who took the challenge seriously. Lé Darien Diaz, Marcus Palmer and Jeff Gonzalez took the stage a gleam of competition in their eyes. In a frenzy, they set about trying to undress, change the diaper, toss the diaper across the stage into a small trash can, redress the baby, swaddle it and then strap it back into the stroller to run to finish line.

This year’s facilitator 94.9 Morning Mix’s Mrs. Grant whipped the dad’s into a frenzy of action as she kept a close eye just how well they were adhering the rules of the Olympics.

“I noticed that the one dad had gotten the “dirty diaper” into the trash can and was frantically wrapping up the baby,” she said laughing. “I called out ‘hey dad did you remember the clean diaper.'”

Turned out despite having to re-undress the baby quickly, Gonzalez was able to finish in time to be the first to get across the stage to the finish. Palmer succumbing to the heat of the moment opted to put his baby’s outfit back on upside down and backwards.

This year’s Baby Fair included three heats of the Diaper Derby. Babies filled the stage while parents stood at one end attempting to entice them to crawl across it. While they are all started out with the best of intentions many of the babies found that a little piece of something on the carpet was a good reason to stop and have a taste, others were entranced by their co-competitors and straight for them to have a meet and greet and at least one opted to head straight off the stage to be caught just in the nick of time by a nervous parent.

Thanks again to MIXfm for including the Diaper Bank of Southern Arizona in this year’s event. Check out the photos below.
